The 2018 Lamb & Hayward Masterworks season opens with a flourish of new sounds from Christchurch born composer, John Young. This work has been commissioned to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of the CSO, and we invite you to celebrate with us at its premiere.

Tchaikovsky’s dramatic and powerful Sixth Symphony is a masterful example of the composer at the full height of his power.

He considered it to be “the best thing I ever composed or shall compose”, which proved to be sadly prophetic, as Tchaikovsky died of cholera shortly after the symphony’s first performance.

Legendary violinist Shlomo Mintz features as soloist in Mendelssohn’s lyrical Concerto for Violin in E minor before directing the orchestra in Brahms’ symphonic masterpiece, his third symphony.

Mintz is regarded as one of the foremost violinists of our time, esteemed for his impeccable musicianship, stylistic versatility and commanding technique.

During Stalin’s purges of 1937, Dimitri Shostakovich was denounced by the Communist Party who decried his most recent works as endangering the Soviet people. Under tremendous pressure, Shostakovich responded with his Fifth Symphony.

Performing their own hit music from the award winning Disney blockbuster Moana, Te Vaka joins the CSO for a magical night of music inspired by the songs and stories of the Pasifika region.

CSO Concertmaster Martin Riseley leads the orchestra on an exotic musical journey along the Silk Road.

In 1907, Ralph Vaughan Williams moved to Paris to study orchestration with Maurice Ravel. This was the beginning of an enduring friendship that spanned a world war and sent British music in an entirely new direction.
