Principal Cello

Galyna Zelinska

Born into family of professional orchestral musicians, Galyna Zelinska started to play the cello at the age of six when she entered the Special Music School for Gifted Children in Kiev. After eight years Zelinska then attended Kiev State Music College where she gained a Degree in Performance and Teaching. After Graduation from the College she continued her musical education at the Kiev State Conservatoire of Music studying under Marina Tchaikovska, who had been a former student of Mstislav Rostropovich.

Whilst still a student, Zelinska began performing with the Orchestra of Ukrainian Folk Instruments and won an audition to join the State Symphony Orchestra of the Ukrainian SSR (in 1990 the orchestra was renamed to the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine).

In 1989 Galyna was appointed as a Principal Cello of the NSOU where she worked until her appointment as Principal Cello with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in 1995. Galyna has toured intensively and performed in some of the best concert halls throughout the world including Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.
She has been involved in more than 30 recordings with Naxos and has appeared many times as a soloist both with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and other orchestras.

Since arriving in New Zealand Galyna has established herself as a very keen and passionate cello teacher, with many of her past and present students performing alongside her in the CSO.
