Born in Whangarei, Helen Webby began playing the harp at the age of 12, and studied with Dorothea Franchi (Auckland), Rebecca Harris (Auckland), Edward Witsenburg (Holland) and Maria Graf (Germany). She graduated from University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Music in harp, undertook postgraduate studies in The Netherlands, and in 1996 completed a Masters degree in Harp and Music Teaching from the Hochschule for Music in Hamburg.
She has won numerous scholarships, from the Dutch Government, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Creative New Zealand.
Helen joined the CSO in 2000 as Principal Harp. She also performs with other New Zealand orchestras and toured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to Europe in 2010.
In 2007 Helen collaborated with flautist Anthony Ferner to record the CD 'Reverie' (Manu), in 2009 released the CD 'The Golden Strand' with Scottish guitarist Davy Stuart and in February 2011 released a third duo CD, 'Love’s Nature', (Manu) with soprano Pepe Becker. Her fourth CD of commissions from NZ composers will be released in 2012.
In 2010 Helen founded the Christchurch Harp Orchestra, and is passionately spreading the magic of the harp far and wide.
In 2012 Helen toured the length of NZ with String Wizardry (Arts On Tour NZ) and for Chamber Music NZ with soprano Pepe Becker.
