In 1787, Mozart visited Prague, also known as the Golden City, where he received a rock-star welcome following the tremendous success of his recent opera, The Marriage of Figaro. Admired and celebrated, Mozart was the toast of the town. In between the parties and elaborate dinners, Mozart held the first performance of his 38th Symphony, “Prague”, which astounded audience and critics with its innovation and brilliance. Inspired by a trip to Las Vegas during a BBC Philharmonic tour to the USA, Peter Maxwell Davies’ “Mavis in Las Vegas” is a brash and sassy tribute to the Sin City.
