Nicky was born in Christchurch and she started the violin at the age of 4 as a Suzuki student at the Christchurch School of Music. She later received violin and chamber music tuition at the ChristChurch Conservatoire. Nicky joined the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra while she was still at school in 1981.
In 1986, she completed a diploma of Occupational Therapy and practiced as a therapist for a year. In 1988, she returned to her music studies, completing a bachelor of music in violin performance and a diploma of teaching from the Christchurch College of Education.
Since graduating, Nicky has pursued an active role both as a teacher and musician in Christchurch. In addition to her teaching programme, she manages the Forte Itinerant Music Service and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orchestra.
