Tom Rainey

Tom has collaborated as a performer, arranger and conductor with the orchestra for over 25 years, and over that time has had a hand in the orchestra’s work with popular artists through projects with Renée Geyer, Midge Marsden, Bic Runga, Julia Deans, Anika Moa, Dave Dobbyn, Sir Howard Morrison and Goldenhorse.
 
Other highlights have included arrangements for artists such as Tim Beveridge, Judd Arthur, Ali Harper, Hayley Westenra, Yulia Townsend and Greg Johnson, and larger orchestral projects such as the Bacharach Years, Salmonella Dub’s Feel the Seasons Change (NZSO), and Kiwi Jazz 2009 with Whirimako Black.  
 
In 2011 he conducted and arranged Kiwi Soul for the CSO featuring LA Mitchell, and conducted Australian jazz trumpeter James Morrison’s performance with the orchestra for the Christchurch Jazz Festival, including a performance of Duke Ellington’s Harlem Suite.  Tom’s arrangements have been performed by NZ’s regional orchestras, the NZSO, the Australian Pops Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (in Carnegie Hall, NY) and the Liverpool Philharmonic.
 
As an educator, he has been involved over the last 25 years with the evolution and development of CPIT Music Arts (Jazz School), and is currently head of the institutions Creative Industries department.
